A sweet SkeleLotl charity pin inspired by celebratory Dia de los Muertos sugar skulls and the snowdrop flower. For each pin sold, I will donate to plant one tree through One Tree Planted’s farmland conversion and forest restoration project in Senguio and Ocampo. This is a lovely project that works with farmers and local communities (not against them) to empower, rebuild habitats, and prevent soil erosion and landslides.
About the series
My Lotl characters are based on the axolotl: also known as the Mexican walking fish. Axolotls are endemic to the outskirts of Mexico City, and they’re critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss. I’ve wanted to create a charity collection for them for a while, but I wanted it to be special. In early 2021, I shared a joyful Lotl illustration inspired by frosted sugar skull cookies and La Calavera Catrina, both associated with the celebration of Dia de los Muertos.
Lots of people requested these illustrations as wooden pins and stickers, but as they’re inspired by a spiritual and cultural holiday, I would not feel comfortable selling them just for monetary gain. So instead, I thought I could do some good with them:
For each wooden pin sold, I will be donating to plant one tree in a forest restoration and farmland conversion project in Senguio and Ocampo. The project works with local landowners and communities, not against them, and aims to help prevent landslides, reduce soil erosion, and rebuild habitats that can be enjoyed by both local communities and wildlife. The Day of the Dead celebration originates in Aztec, Mayan and Toltec tradition, and starts on the 1st of November each year. It is a holiday that reunites the living and dead, where mourning is exchanged with celebration of loved ones who have died. You can learn more about it here. I am not from this culture, and that’s important to keep in mind when reading my description. But I love its message, and personally, I think it’s the most significant holiday in human history.
